Thunderbird defaults to first of my email addresses to send a meeting invitation acceptance, rather than the mail address the invite sent to

First, I'm not using Lightning. I don't want Thunderbird to create calendar entries, etc. I just want to be able to click Accept on an invitation I receive, and that response be sent from the email address the invite was sent to.

At the moment it gets sent from the first email account address in the list of email accounts under Settings.

This seems rather odd, since when I press Reply or Reply all when I am have the invite open, the email account that comes up is the one that it was sent to, rather than any other. In addition, even if an email is sent to an incorrect address, if I choose to reply to it, I have a choice of changing the From email address. This option does not seem to be available in invite responses.

Neither of the accounts in question is gmail

OK, I see the problem. I created a test event and sent invitations to one of my (non-default) accounts, but clicking Accept sent the response from the default account. Unlike a regular reply, 'Accept' doesn't allow the choice of the From account, as you have noted. This is discussed here, with reference to bug 589081.

Since you don't use Lightning, you can't change the Email entry in Calendar Properties, so at the moment it seems the only option is to set another account as Default in Account Settings/Account Actions. This is only worth doing if all invitations are sent to the same account.

When you reply to the message, the From address B is the one the message was sent to, at least it is in the Write window. But is that address configured to send on the smtp server associated with that account? Open Tools/Account Settings, select the account B in the left pane, then check Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the lower right pane. If the smtp server is the one associated with the first account A, i.e. the Default account, there is a good chance messages sent from B are received as if they are sent from A. This is true for gmail accounts, but can also apply to other services.

If this is the case, set account A to send on smtp A and account B to send on smtp B.

Unfortunately that isn't the problem.

It isn't the normal Reply that is the problem. That works perfectly.

The problem only occurs when I click on the Accept or Decline button on the invitation. This creates a response that gets sent as though from the first email account address in the list of email accounts under Settings. It shouldn't.

The response should be sent from the email account that the invite has been sent to.

The SMTP server for each of the accounts (the 1st one on the list and the one that receives the invite) are different .

Let me know if you need more info.

The Fitzcarraldo's Blog page (link in answer above) has provided a very simple solution that would apply to my case, since I only receive invitations that need a response to 1 work email address. Thanks for the help.
