I allowed the update when Thunderbird was open when prompted yesterday. I have not been able to start Thunderbird since then.

I have rebooted my computer and tried to start it in safe mode by holding down the Shift key. Any tip will be greatly appreciated.

Hallelujah!!! I have finally been able to use Firefox with the same remedy after missing Firefox for many months - installing the latest version of Firefox 58: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/58.0.2/win64/en-US/

Give me some time catch up and organize my email and have a break of dealing with this email issue before following your instructions to diagnose the problem. I will report back.

Thanks for finding this. Can you capture a screen shot of it?

If I remember correctly, it is a blank window with nothing in it.

Now, I can confidently declare that I am able to use the latest version of Thunderbird finally. Summary of a long story:

  1. I upgraded the hardware of my PC (CPU, RAM and motherboard) last December, but used the same Windows 10 installation initially. The problem remained.
  2. I did a clean install of Windows 10 (i.e. on a brand new SSD with new partitions) in late January, and I have been able to use the latest TB without any problem since then.

This has also solved the similar problem of not being able to run the latest version of Firefox The old Windows 10 installation is a result of multiple OS upgrades starting from Windows 8.0 or Windows 7 (it went through all versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1). I think it must be some residue from those upgrades preventing the use of the latest version of TB or FF.
