How can I burn a CD when the "burn" function remains faded out?

When I load a blank CD, it does not show on the desktop. Hence there is nothing to which I can drag-and-drop a file that contains music which I want to burn to the blank disk. Once or twice I have found a menu that contains the option "burn", but it is faded out and therefore inaccessible. To eject the blank disk, I have to restart the computer.

Not sure this has anything to do with Thunderbird email client software.
