This also applies to mp3s and torrents. I can't figure out how to save these files rather than open them in an app. I've tried reading defaults and never opening associated links in the app preferences in the android settings. Opening these files fails when the files are on a password protected website. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to long press on the "download" or file link and you will see the option to download the file.
