Hi,

A good chunk of my time is spent using sharepoint as part of collaborative work. For years now I find myself using two different browsers, Firefox for everything except when I work with sharepoint for which I use chrome or edge. The issue is that I can open a document in sharepoint however the document always opens as read only document. Even if I checkout the document in advance in sharepoint it stills opens as read only. This of course makes the process a bit cumbersome has I need to save the document locally and upload the document to sharepoint after I finish with it. On the other hand when I use edge or chrome the document opens and prompts me to check out the document (this is done within word or excel). After checking out the document (one button click) I can make my edits and when I click save it saves directly in sharepoint. Once I’m finished with it I can check in the document before closing the document which makes the entire process more streamlined. The only difference I can see is the fact that Firefox opens the document in read only mode. Is there a way of making it open office documents in edit mode? Thank you in advance for any pointer or suggestions

This behavior is standard for files you open in an external application. Files that are passed to an application are downloaded to the temp folder and it isn't guaranteed that you keep the file when you close the application (Firefox may remove this file at any time) and you may lose your edits, so the file is saved as read-only and when you make changes you need to use "Save as" to save the file to a different folder. You will have to accept the extra effort and save the file under a different name.
