I understand that Mozilla doesn't provide email. This is done through Thunderbird. Is Thunderbird a webmail service or is it an email browser?

Also if I want to sign up for Thunderbird the system asks for a recovery email address. I was wanting Thunderbird to be the only email service? Can't you set up a mobile phone number password recovery system instead?

There may be some confusion on this. Thunderbird is an email client, in that it helps in managing your email. You still need an email account, and that is where you were asked for a recovery email address by whatever email provider you used. Thunderbird would not ask for that. I encourage you to pursue your questions with whichever email provider that you wish, such as Gmail or others.
