I can no longer send emails from one of my Hotmail accounts. At some stage I stopped being able to send or receive with this account; I fixed the receiving end by changing the authentication details but I can't find a fix for sending.

The error given is:

Login to server smtp-mail.outlook.com with username xxxxxxx failed.

I've checked the password and SMTP settings and they are correct (Server name: smtp-mail.outlook.com, port: 587, connection security: STARTTLS, authentication method: normal password).

Any ideas?!

try setting incoming to outlook.office365.com, 993, ssltls, OAUTH2 and output to smtp.office365.com, 587, starttls, OAUTH2

Thanks, but that gives the same error even with entering my password again. Anything else I can try?

Changing the authentication method should start a whole permissions authentication flow using web pages. Not just a simple "enter my password again". SO I have to query if you changed the right SMTP server to the right things.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I did indeed change the right server to the right things and nothing like you suggest happened when I changed the incoming settings.

However, Thunderbird seems to have ad a good think overnight/restart and magic has happened - it's working, ask no questions. Thanks @david for the new settings!'
