TonyE, I think you may have lead the OP down a trail of unnecessary time consuming checks. This might be because you have not encountered roll over popups before? I know of no other term that they are called.

Roll over popups annoy people on both Firefox and IE. They are not addon specific, nor anything malware based.

They are getting more and more commonplace. They often take the form of a doubly underlined hyperlink.

They are most likely implemented in either Flash or JavaScript, but I cannot be sure. I don't believe they are implemented in straight-out Java.
