I'm in Spain and cannot get the English version. I've tried going through tools, options, contents, languages but this just does not work.

Is it the Google page that appears in Spanish?

If it is you can use http://www.google.com/ncr which will not re-direct to the local language version.

Thanks Tony, but this doesn't appear to be the solution. The search engine/site is headed Firefox Start and over the seach box is Google. Not sure if the link below will show you what I mean.

http://www.google.es/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official

I've tried changing 'google.es' to 'google.en-gb' but it just flips back to the former! Please help!!

The equivalent UK version is http://www.google.co.uk/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official

I would not use that though and use http://www.google.com/ncr instead.

Thanks Tony. Sorry to be a pain but I did use http://www.google.com/ncr. That was fine for my 'standard' Google search page, but it doesn't work for Firefox start. Why do you not recommend http://www.google.co.uk/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official ? What's the problem/risk?

Google has a habit of re-directing the search page based on your IP address, the one I recommend will not re-direct. The main differences between the two versions is that the one I recommend does not have the Firefox branding and will never re-direct to another language. If you want the Firefox branding use the UK version of the home page.

Once you have both the English and Spanish versions installed, you can use the following add-on to switch between the two versions, to see if that's what you want. I am in the US but am using the Chinese version of Firefox by using this add-on:

You can set the language in on the Google Settings page.
If you want to keep that setting then you need to create an allow cookie exception for the Google site(s) probably google.com and google.co.uk.
That should work for all Google sites including the Firefox start page.
