Pages that use Unicode (UTF-8) display a little box with the hex code if the character can't be displayed.
That allows you to look up the character in a table.

FF FD is the code for a missing character in a font.
If you see such a box with hex code in it then that means that Firefox can't map a character to a specific font and you have to install a font that covers the affected characters.
As a test you can also try to disable the website fonts and if that still doesn't work then try a different default font like Verdana or Arial.
