how do I download anything w/out internet explorer interfering?

I can't see if my windows updates are successful because that is an internet explorer page! Yesterday, a windows update attempted to upload 9 updates but my computer shut down suddenly. When I tried to see what was wrong it said that I needed to update my internet explorer and when I tried to do that from internet explorer, I got a warning message that said my computer security won't allow me to. If I try to download anything, firefox cancels it and internet explorer deletes the download or maybe the windows firewall does. Its very frustrating.

Try doing those Windows updates and the IE update using IE, in an Admin Logon User Account. Some parts of Windows Updates use ActiveX which most browser other than IE don't use.
