I want to change the default location for downloads
Hi many people email me Word 2007 document and while using Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4, the default download file is the temp file. When I get a Word file while using Firefox, I open the file, make changes, click SAVE AS, and the default saving file is always the temp file. How can I change it so whenever I go through this process, it automatically saves it on my desktop? I have already tried TOOLS>OPTIONS>GENERAL TAB>DOWNLOADS>SAVE FILE TO DESKTOP but that doesn't work. Please advise. Thanks.

When viewed in a Firefox tab using the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) plug-in for Mozilla browsers, those downloaded Word files really aren't editable, although they seem to be. Save those files before editing them, and then you'll probably have to open them in Word directly. At least that's what I need to do using OpenOffice and the OpenOffice Plugin for Mozilla browsers, for Word files.
Thanks for your reply. I may need to explain more. I don't view the documents in a Firefox tab. Here's the situation. I teach for a college online and have about 90 students. They all send me their assignments in Word 2007. I open their assignments, make corrections and when I go to save it (to send the document back to them), I click on "save as" within Word and it automatically takes me to the temp file. This is the problem, I want it to automatically take me to the desktop file in the "save as" box. That will save me a lot of time trying to find the desktop file each time I grade 90 student's assignments. I'm sure there's a way to make the desktop my default location for saving Word docs opened from the internet. Any further help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
If you open a file directly via an other program and not save the file then that file will always be downloaded to the temp folder and you can't change that.
