the green progress line in the location bar of FF4 is really annoying and distracting ...not to mention a rather pukey green !!

How do I turn it off ...can I turn it off? (please put a link somewhere to retro-fit my FF 3.6!!!)

That is not a built-in feature of Firefox 4. Check your add-ons to see if one of them has added this. The Status-4-evar add-on for example can do this.
