After updating to Firefox 8, none of the extensions in my Add-on Manager from my Firefox 7 installations are visible.

Also, when I try to install an add-on, I get an error message saying that the extension can't be installed because Firefox cannot modify the needed file.

Simply install ONE of your existing add-ons. Restart Firefox. Patiently allow all of your add-ons (unless you don't want them). Restart Firefox. Browse happy. Don't put in nearly as much effort as I did researching the problem.
