Under Firefox 10.0.2: I have bookmarked pages organized under folders. I can delete entire folders. However, right-clicking on subordinate items (or Bookmarks>Show All Bookmarks, then selecting folder in left pane, then selecting subordinate item in right pane) yields a popup window with 'Delete' grayed out.

Which folder are you trying to delete?

You can't delete the default bookmark system folders (Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Unsorted).

For example, I have...

  Bookmarks Toolbar [System Folder]
       Computing [User Folder]
Google Online Security Blog [User Folder]
Celebrating one year... [Bookmarked RSS Item]
Android and Security [Bookmarked RSS Item]
                 ... followed by many more.

'Delete' is grayed out when I select and attempt to organize RSS items. I've got a suspicion that RSS items cannot be deleted.

RSS items are loaded by Firefox from the server via an XML file that is parsed to show as a folder (you can open the feed location via the location bar).
You can't remove items from such a folder. The current content will be refreshed if you update such a live feed.
