Hi

Firefox 18.1.0 18.0.1 crashes constantly whenever I close a tab.

This is getting very frustrating I have used FF for several years now and would hate to have to find another browser. Any suggestions please.

Edited Firefox version number from 18.1.0 to 18.0.1

This thread on the Norton forums has more information, so read it through:

One user posted that he was able to disable the Norton Toolbar extension in the Add-ons Manager by exiting Firefox completely instead of using the Restart button (if you see the Mozilla Crash Reporter, click "Quit Firefox") then start Firefox fresh. Another user posted that simply disabling Norton Safe Search fixed the problem. I don't use Norton products but I found some information here). The right workaround may have to do with what Norton software you have installed and the version.

If looks like a Norton fix for 2012 and 2013 products will be released the week of Feb 1 according to a post by Symantec employee Tony Weiss dated 01-25-2013 here: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Firefox-18-Support-for-Norton-Toolbar/td-p/886714

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox location bar (that's where you enter your website names) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the most recent 5 report IDs that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your forum response.

Thanks in advance for your help!

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

The crashes can possibly be caused by Norton software like Norton Confidential or Norton Identity Safe if the crashes have coFFPlgn.dll or couictlr.dll in the crash signature or the crash report (bug 783369).

Disable the Norton Toolbar and possibly other Norton extensions in Firefox to see if that helps.

Thank you very much for responding here are the crash reports

I also attempted to disable the Norton Extension but FF keeps crashing when I try to restart meaning that the changes do not take effect.

Hi Thanks very much it is now fixed. I disable Nortons safe search and tool bar.

I couldn't close FF without it crashing so I closed it through the crash report but it still didn't make the changes.

I then closed it again through the crash report and restarted my laptop then restarted FF and this did the trick. Thanks

You're welcome, belindas.

Thanks for letting us know that you were able to work around the problem by disabling the Norton Toolbar extension and Norton Safe Search ... which finally took effect after closing Firefox through the Mozilla Crash Reporter, then restarting your computer and finally restarting Firefox.

I have Norton 360 on two Windows 7 systems running Firefox 18.0.1. I have run Norton update. Firefox is almost unusable on one system because it crashes on most tab closes, but the other system is fine. The crashes are somewhat random, though prevalent. Could it be a memory leak issue?

The update released by Norton is for the 2013 products, if you have the 2013 version please let us know so we can further escalate this. If you have the 2012 version, please wait for an update. Thanks!
