I can play videos on most sites except CNN and CBS where only comercials play
I have Time Warner cable and just read that Time Warner has dropped CBS. I am assuming that CBS used a third party to push it's streaming so that would figure why CNN does not work also. I don't know. Could someone please get an answer for this so I can stop trying to fix what is not broken. I can play videos on many web sites with commercials or not except for these two.

Are that secure websites opened via a secure https link?
If content is missing or otherwise not working when a secure https connection is used then check if there is a shield icon to the left of the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar indicating that content is blocked.

Nope, just says CNN.Com It also says "This site does not supply identity information". On the Home page clicking play does nothing just a white box and a black bar at the bottom of the white box. No pop up controls or anything. On the video page first click plays the video commercial then when done it just stops and displays a blank screen. If you hover over the play button it shows the progress bar as at the end and says AD at the beginning. Just sits there. Clicking on other videos has no effect.
Update: I just tried CBS video in IE 9 and it works. However I did get a flash error that said that the error was not captured and unknown. After hitting ignore it played the videos fine. Only in Firefox is the video just not there.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Problem solved! I downloaded and installed Firefox 24.0 Beta. Apparently Mozilla programming team made all the right changes in the new release. Now all videos starting working on CNN, Yahoo and BBC.
ANNNNNNT! no go. not even commercials play now. Went back to 23. Only plays first commercial then the progress bar sticks at the end and then nothing from then on. Safe mode did not do anything.
Make sure all your plugins are up to date. Because the update to firefox helped out in both my laptop and desktop running on Windows 8. Hopefully this helps.

Ok well I'm on Windows 7 Sp1 and yes everything is up to date. The only services I have disabled are the Peer services, group, network ID, and Protocol. At one time I had problems playing DVDs in Wmedia player but that problem was fixed doing a repair. New disk drive new video all new hardware. all new windows 7 install. just moved over the bookmarks. Even tried not using the book mark for CBS and CNN and FOX. Why would PBS work and the others not?
BY the way, the other day I did some 30 Windows updates for the third time. Where do all these come from? Now the commercials don't play and before that all the commercials played. Question: what are all the security full control objects for the windows directory and sub directories?
I'm not really an expert, but can you provide a couple of links to the videos that do not play? Might be helpful to see what is wrong.
Meanwhile install the latest flash player (uncheck the box to install McAfee, you don't need that: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
And to answer your last question about directories, I believe its to share files and folders over the network

OK, I have tried the Host rename thing, no go. I can watch on NBC, PBS, and BBC but no CBS CNN or Fox. Now I don't know about you but I find that if a Browser can play video it should be able to play all video. I tried to contact CNN and they responded with a message that is not even close to what I asked them. I fell this is a script problem. Their script that runs CNN's videos is called NO-JS. Isn't that weird? I looked and I did not have JS installed so I installed it but it did not help. I reinitialized Firefox with no add ons and no good. SO, would you feel that you were being personally blocked by these organizations? Why isn't anyone else having these problems? On Fox videos I can watch the Fox shows but not the FoxNews. One of players pops up a captions settings and when I try to set it it says it has no access to the file system. So anybody?
