Everytime I click on File>New Tab a new tab opens with trovi.com loaded. I would prefer that an empty window open.

Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type about:config. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Type browser.newtab.url and press enter. browser.newtab.url tells Firefox what to show when a new tab is opened. If you want, right click and select Modify. You can change the setting to;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any web page or about: page you want.

The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as browser.startup.homepage.

Went to http://malwaretips.com/blogs/trovi-removal/. Step 2 is the problem. There is no gear icon on top right corner of firefox. Icons are star,clipboard,arrow,house, green circle, and three horizontal lines. I'm using win7 pro 64bits, Firefox 31.0, does that display differently? Is there another way to get there? jim

Don't you have the Firefox Navigation Toolbar visible with the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (New Fx Menu)?

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar and search for prefs that refer to trovi. You can reset user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
