I cannot access my Windstream.net email accounts.
I recently switched to Windstream dsl and have 5 email accounts set up there. I can access the accounts through the web. I can set up the accounts in Thunderbird and can receive emails. I cannot send emails as it gives me an error trying to log on to Windstream's smtp server. Any suggestions?
Chosen solution
had the same problem later that evening. in doing some investigating, I had an issue with my connections at my computer. I was connected through Wi-Fi to my windstream isp and connected through hard wire lan to my hughesnet isp. apparently the servers could not handle both isp's trying to connect at the same time. Oh well, live and learn. Issue is resoled. Thank you to all who helped me troubleshoot.

Check your SMTP server settings to be sure they are what your provider is looking for.
From the Menu Bar select Tools-Account Settings-Outgoing Server (SMTP)
Use the edit button to make changes.
No menu bar? Press the alt key.
I have and I set them to what the provider told me. smpt.windstream.net , port 25, no SSL, no encrypted password and full email address. What else am I forgetting?
All the Windstream settings I find require authentication. Do you have it set to normal password? It shows that port 25 and 1025 are available. Try 1025 and see if that works.
Lots of providers block port 25 since it is insecure. What happens if you switch to port 465 with SSL?
First, make sure the server name begins with smtp, not smpt. Second, the Connection security should be None, the Authentication should be Password, transmitted insecurely, the User name should be your full email address, and if port 25 doesn't work, try 1025 or 587.
Also, Windstream may require that each account uses its own SMTP server (same settings except different username/password). Additional servers can be added under Tools/Account Settings/Outgoing Server (SMTP), and the server can be specified under Tools/Account Settings/accountname and selecting Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the right pane.
Modified
Yes, I have it set to normal password, no encryption. I have it set to port 25. I tried 1025 and get a timed out error. Set port to 465 with SSL and get the same message of login to server failed.
I appreciate your help, any other suggestions?
I do have smtp, just got a little dyslexic when typing. The connection is none, and the PW is set to transmit insecurely. My user name is my full email address and I have tried port 25, 1025 and 587 and they all give me the same error.
Windstream does require separate SMTP server settings and I have them all set up with different usernames and passwords. I cannot get one of them to work so I have not adjusted any of the others yet.
I welcome any and all advice.
If you have an anti-virus program set to scan outgoing mail, disable that option and see if it helps.
Delete the password in Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords and re-enter it when prompted the next time you connect to the account.
I have AVG and it outgoing email check is disabled.
I deleted the passwords and it pops up with the cannot connect to server with buttons of retry, new password and cancel. I hit the new password and typed it in and came back to the same box. did this 2-3 times and hit retry a couple of times, still no go on sending. I am receiving emails, just not sending them.
I Just pinged smtp.windstream.net and got no response, so the server is down. You might still be able to send through their webmail page in the meantime.
I never thought of that! I just pinged also and pinged the pop server, neither one came back with a response. I pinged mail.windstreeam.net and got a response. and yes, I inadvertently misspelled it. WOW! All of a sudden I can send and receive with all 5 email accounts through Thunderbird. Before this I tried setting up and Outlook account and had the same problems. Now I can send and receive through it as well.
Curiosity got the better of me and I pinged pop.windstreeam.net and smtp.windstreeam.net and received responses from them also. Still no response from pop.windstream.net or smtp.windstream.net and these are what the emails are set to. Computer glitch or cyber ghosts, anyone's guess? At least I am up and running, for now.
