When I look at my mail list, I notice that once an incoming message has been read, it changes from BOLD to "not BOLD" on the main list. Can I set Thunderbird to make read messages appear in a different color?

Set up a filter with the rule Status + is + Read, and then make the Action to Tag the message. Define the tag name and colour under Tools/Options/Display/Tags.
