Hello,

You can remove search engines by clicking the search bar provider icon or the down triangle in your search bar, and then selecting "Manage Search Engines". Please see Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox for more information.

Note that the current release comes with DuckDuckGo as one of the default built-in search engines. So you can only disable this search engine or you would have to remove its XML file from the browser/searchplugins folder in the Firefox installation folder.

how do you disable a search engine? If that's the only way I can get rid of duckduckgo, I'll take it.

The steps I provided in my last post will allow you to remove search engines from the list. If it is bothering you that much, go to the "Manage Search Engines", select DuckDuckGo, and click "Remove"

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Macs so if you want to remove it from the installation directory, please see:

And follow cor-el's post of removing the XML from the "browser/searchplugins" folder.

The "manage search engines" on my imac does not list "duckduckgo" . therefore I am unable to remove it in that manner.

How did you install Duckduckgo? You did not install a search plugin?

I opened firefox and "it" automatically suggested that I try it out. I did so and did not like ddg but now cannot remove it. My version of os is 10.6.8 and the ability to simply go to the "manage search engine list" and delete the search engine doesn't list ddg ,nor does it show the ability to do any management of anything.

Hi kenaln, as cor-el said above and also CoryMH mentioned above, you have to delete the XML file from "browser/searchplugins" folder which is inside Firefox installation directory on your Mac :

  • /Applications/Firefox.app

thank you

Unfortunately, that location is inside the Firefox application package in Mac OS. If you right-click the Firefox.app file, there is an item, "Show Package Contents" you can select. That should show the folders and files in the package. The path to the search plugins is: Contents > MacOS > browser > searchplugins.
