Am converting from Outlook which downloaded IMAP messages into the local inbox then deleted them from the service provider's server. The only way i can see to do the same thing under Thunderbird is to move the messages to local folders then delete them from the server.

I doubt that. What you describe sounds pretty much like a POP account.
