Verizon email said: "we've modified the way your Verizon email is sent/received through smart phones/tablets or email software such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Apple Email, or Windows Live Mail.." Do I need to do anything to change the settings on my Mozilla Thunderbird [which was not mentioned]?

If they have changed server settings then yes you need to make those changes to what you have in Thunderbird. You need to ask them what they changed.
