When opening payroll portion on ADP website, a new window opens that displays the HTML code instead of the Login screen that is supposed to load.

At a customers site, they use ADP Enterprise HR for payroll. They are able to view paystubs on their personal section, but when going to the section to enter time for payroll the window that opens displays the HTML code. It should open a browser window with the ADP logon. We have the latest version of Firefox installed and have updated Java. The browser window that opens does not contain any of the toolbars, menus or navigation buttons. Below is the code from the window that opens. Keep in mind that this is a printout that I scanned in and converted from a PDF.

I'm assuming the problem is on a Windows computer...

The Java Deployment Toolkit plugin, which is distinct from the JRE, is set to Ask to Activate by default due to security considerations. It's possible that the pop-up window has been stripped of the main toolbar and therefore is not displaying any UI or affordance to activate that plugin. If you relaunch that login window in a standard window or tab, can you see whether the plugin notification icon is there? To do that:

  • Open the web console in the popup by pressing Ctrl+Shift+k
  • Type or paste the following script in the bar at the bottom of the console and press Enter to execute it:

    window.open(window.location.href, "_blank");

If you do not see a plugin notification icon in a regular window/tab, it would be worth double-checking that your Java plugins are not set to "Never Activate" on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Then check the permission settings on the right side.

Any new info as a result of these tests?

This is what I was looking for, but it did not quite solve my problem. I was able to get the Menu bar and Tool bar to appear, but I did not get a request to activate the Java Plug-In. Below is the code from the ADP dropdown menu that my user selects to enter payroll. I got this by right-clicking on the link and selecting "Inspect Element".

Code from link: checkAndFollowUrlPopUp('https://portal.adp.com/wps/ssoLink?dest=practitioner', 'Enterprise', 'status,resizable,scrollbars,menubar=no,toolbar=no,location=no,width=1024,height=768');

The URL of the window that opens showing the code is https://enterprisehr.us.adp.com/skfp/ADPPortalSSO

In the Add-Ons Manager, I see a grayed out option to "Always Activate" the Java Plug-in. Is it possible to edit the registry to allow this to be selected?

Thank you for your help.

Hmm, password required. Makes sense.

For the JRE / SE, Yes. For the Deployment Toolkit, I don't think so because I believe this is governed by the block list. The block list is a regularly refreshed file listing vulnerable and dangerous add-ons. I suppose there must be a way to block the block file, but I don't recommend it.

Also, if you aren't getting a plugin notification, then Firefox is not getting the request to use it. Or it is blocked at the site level.

If you check site-specific plugin permissions, can you see whether the Deployment Toolkit is blocked there? You can call that up from the Page Info dialog. Either:

  • right-click the page and choose View Page Info > Permissions
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Permissions
  • click the padlock in the address bar > More Information > Permissions

So I had the user log into her ADP site, then I cleared the users browsing history in Firefox. I right-clicked on the link that is not working and selected Open in New Window. this opens that same ADP home page in a new window. I then entered the portal.adp.com link in the address bar and we got a logon window up. I had her try to log on, but could not get to where she needed to be. I checked the page specific permissions and set Java to always run, but nothing I did made a difference.

I appreciate all of your help, but I think this may be a problem for ADP to take care of.
