while streaming video, a new page or tab opened with audio saying to call an 800 number because i've been infected with a virus or malware. the site claims to be mozilla and that i shouldn't make any online purchases until i call the 800 number. is this something mozilla does and if so, can i have the 800 number to call? seemed strange to me and made me question it.

If you get a pop-up message asking to update Firefox or plugins or scanning for malware then such a message is likely a scam and you should never respond to such an alert to avoid getting infected with malware.

  • Only update Firefox via "Help > About" or by downloading and installing Firefox from the Mozilla server and never via a pop-up or link on a web page.
  • Plugins should only be updated via the plugin itself or by visiting the home page of the plugin.

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

No, Mozilla does not give you any phone numbers to call for any reason in anything including Firefox. Mozilla does not even have resources for a call center to do one on one support by phone, chat or email.

Best case scenario it was just a scam popup.
