How to set the default search engine under Mozilla.cfg for Firefox 38.4.0 ESR
Using the following options to set the default Search Engine under Mozilla.cfg doesn't work in Firefox 38.4.0 ESR
pref("browser.search.countryCode", "US"); pref("browser.search.defaultenginename.US", "data:text/plain,browser.search.defaultenginename.US=Google"); pref("browser.search.geoSpecificDefaults", false); pref("browser.search.highlightCount", 0); pref("browser.search.region", "US"); pref("browser.search.selectedEngine", "Google");

I think that the data structure is only required if you set the default of a pref via defaultPref();
Did you try this?
- pref("browser.search.defaultenginename.US", "Google");
