help please !!! things have now gotten to the point where firefox is broken
It started with certain websites parts of pages being unavailable. I got some help from Fred McD which fixed the problem, but it came right back and now there are many more pages that fail to load completely. I cleared offending cookies. cleared cache, disabled hardware acceleration but still cannot browse at those sites.

Hello again. First, let's do a clean re-install;
Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then;
Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.
Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.
Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox folders by adding .old to them.
After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done.
I should mention that I am using firefox ESR 38.5.2. I don't want to lose my history. Is there a way to "add back" the history after the fresh install ?
Firefox comes in two or more folders on all computers. They are;
Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And one folder in the profile of each user on the computer.
If you remove the Firefox folder, the user folders would not be affected.
I do not know which registry scanners are free of trojans or viruses. I would like to do it manually. Using regedit and F3 which items should I look for and delete ?
Some anti-virus programs have one. It is best NOT to work on the registry yourself.
I have done so before, since before there was a registry.(WW3.11) I attempted to download a registry editor and AVG stopped me before I could install it claiming it was a trojan. If you know of a site and a program I would appreciate the name/link.
This is free to use.
Note that Firefox 42+ has a Tracking Protection feature that is enabled by default in Private Browsing mode. When you are in private browsing mode then Firefox can show a shield icon at the left end of the location/address bar that some content is affected.
You can disable this feature in "Options/Preferences > Privacy" or via the about:privatebrowsing page that get when you open a New Private Window.
- Options/Preferences > Privacy: "Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows"
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/control-center-site-privacy-and-security-firefox
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.
Thank you but I am using ESR 38.5.2 release
You can check the log in the Web Console for error messages and the Network Monitor (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) to see if content fails to load or is possibly blocked.
Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.
You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
- Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
- Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
- Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
- Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from websites that cause problems:
- Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
I didn't do the above. A new problem surfaced today. when I try to go to NYT.com, firefox begins using memory and continues until I close the program. Last time it was 1.4 Gb. This with only nyt open, no other tabs. I have removed nyt cookies and deleted all history related to NYT. I have refreshed firefox. this problem is still happening in safe mode. If I use chrome I get the nyt page with no problems. I am ready to start over but would like to save as much as possible (history and bookmarks).
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: 3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
You can copy files like these to the current Firefox profile folder to recover specific data.
- bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
- bookmark backups: JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
- SQLite files like cookies.sqlite (cookies) and formhistory.sqlite (saved form data)
- logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
- cert8.db and possibly cert_override.txt for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
- persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
- permissions.sqlite and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for Permissions and Site Preferences
- sessionstore.js for open tabs and pinned tabs and tab groups
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
lost profile. deleted firefox .downloaded latest esr release. reinstalled firefox...imported stuff from chrome (which has no problem with NYT), go to NYT.............same problem
