I've ticked neither "Check for new messages at startup" nor "Check for new messages every __________ minutes" at Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings. Hence, the only time Thunderbird 45.2.0 should download messages is when I click on the "New Messages" button. Yet, it insists upon downloading messages at random! How can I stop this wonky behavior? Thank you for your helpful advice.

Chosen solution

If you are using IMAP most providers push new messages down no matter what option you set.

Thank you for your insight, Airmail! I dumped Internet Message Access Protocol and welcomed back Post Office Protocol. The result: All those bamboozling, stupid and wonky anomalies immediately went away Yay!
