Virtually 70% of times I click to open or to scroll message Thunderbird goes into a "not responding" mode. What has happened?
I have been using Thunderbird for some 10 years now -- it has been great. Last couple of months, almost every time I click to open a message, or when in an email body, when I attempt to scroll, Thunderbird goes into a "not responding" mode. It sometimes takes a full minute to release. I even just installed the 15.0b3 version, and the same thing happens. What can I do to change this behavior?

First steps. For each account, and Local Folders: - Empty Trash (Menu: File: Empty Trash) - Compact Folders (Menu: File: Compact Folders) Restart Thunderbird.
A couple of other standard things I would suggest is a check disk of the drive containing your e-mail, and also defragmenting that drive.
If it is still freezing up, then try disabling your antivirus temporarily and see if the problem still exists. If so, then you can rule out your AV. If it doesn't freeze up with the AV disabled, then try: Options: Security: Antivirus: Uncheck "Allow antivirus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages". Then re-enable the AV program and see if this fixes the problem.
If the AV is not the problem, my next step would be to disable all the add-ons and see if the problem still exists. If there are no freeze-ups after disabling the add-ons, then enable each one and test until you find the problem add-on.
If the Add-Ons are not the problem, then what I would do next is create a new Thunderbird profile and import your messages, address book, filters, and calendar data into the new profile.
