I am missing so many important messages which I suspect are going to junk mail. I cant see them. How can I retrieve these messages and stop them going to junk ?

What makes you think they are going to Junk if you can't see them? I think it is more likely they are going to a Spam folder created by your email provider and that you can't see in Thunderbird. Are you using POP?
