Why has Tbird started showing my in box, then flashing the screen for a few seconds,issues an Account in error message...then settles to work perfectly?

Inbox screen is perfect for half a second. Then screen flashes several times, error message appears "Account in error" Please wait whilst messages are collected...then all is well. I have a fear this is a sign of a virus which is collecting data from new inbox messages every time I access the screen Comments/guidelines/solutions will be welcome...this only started when I switched on after one week's holiday when the desktop was switched off
