Firefox crashes on close
Hi Support!
My problem is that Firefox always crashes on close. After closing, a FF background process appears. It disappears after 1-2 minutes, and the FF crash dialog appears. This happens: - in both regular and Safe mode - if I have done multiple things in multiple tabs, and close FF after two days - if I open FF and immediately close it without doing anything else. - always on close, no exceptions
I always submit the crash reports. Here are the last 19 reports bp-24498cb8-6234-4c42-9b36-1897a0190226 2/26/2019, 9:42 AM bp-9caf973a-98a8-4f70-9c6c-f31580190226 2/26/2019, 9:40 AM bp-c2cd7ddd-d897-4761-ab15-692500190226 2/26/2019, 9:38 AM bp-ec2978c4-501f-4c71-948a-562540190226 2/26/2019, 9:32 AM bp-b0f5d58f-49c6-4f19-96ad-88f0e0190220 2/20/2019, 2:26 PM bp-f4b594b3-e02f-47c4-88b1-0179e0190214 2/14/2019, 8:45 AM bp-3bea99d3-a3fb-4a30-b4b2-e2cf90190213 2/12/2019, 7:03 PM bp-4fb1c888-d623-4fa2-bd8e-8c43c0190212 2/12/2019, 10:50 AM bp-6a4e9d4f-d03b-45f9-a345-50a5c0190212 2/12/2019, 9:34 AM bp-8d875f21-e49f-4fa7-9b6d-c8bc70190211 2/11/2019, 1:27 PM bp-535805d1-8a87-44de-9561-9adfe0181007 10/6/2018, 8:13 PM bp-319c2c7d-87b1-4486-9780-ba6a22151217 12/17/2015, 5:30 PM bp-30a1820f-8bd2-4f68-bd84-980c32151008 10/8/2015, 1:58 PM bp-536ee48a-a5ec-484a-8d29-54f8d0190226 2/26/2019, 9:43 AM bp-c85d9946-376b-4f18-a9d4-264920190226 2/26/2019, 9:43 AM bp-6f95a0b4-660e-4471-bcea-87ffc0190226 2/26/2019, 9:43 AM bp-aa26380d-3af9-4fb3-a717-543690190226 2/26/2019, 9:43 AM bp-d1a26e29-4806-493a-b72f-108ff0190226 2/26/2019, 9:43 AM bp-9ec3d7a7-484a-4cf4-9923-c69bd0190226 2/26/2019, 9:43 AM

hm, sorry for the continued problems - mozilla's devs are still very actively looking into the matter so i hope there will be a fix in sight for the upcoming firefox 66 at least (that version is due to be released on march 19).
have you set your data to be cleared on shutdown in the history section of the firefox menu ≡ > options > privacy panel? if so could you try unticking that for the moment (or also just try disabling clearing offline website data) to see if this is making a difference...

hi john, thank you for reporting with some crash ids - please try if the following step is making a difference: press ctrl+shift+del in firefox to bring up the dialog to clear recent history, select the time range "everything", untick all boxes except "offline website data" and let firefox clear that. does firefox shut down cleanly after that?
Hi philipp,
Yes, indeed, clearing the "offline website data" allows FF to shut down cleanly without crashing. The FF background process seems to end more quickly as well. Does this help you in figuring out the problem?
So what does this mean for my day-to-day FF use? Will I have to clear offline website data every time before closing FF?
Thanks, John B.
i think this step was only necessary one time and afterwards firefox should shutdown properly again. in general the issue you've described is a known one, but developers are still continuing to look into it, as there is no clear-cut solution. more details on it are in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1524200 in case you're interested.
Thank you philipp! I am grateful for your unexpectedly quick responses and useful fix.

Alas, the crashing on close has returned. Here are the two crash reports from earlier today. bp-3eaaf040-e5e8-4bc6-9c02-11d710190228 2/28/2019, 3:51 PM bp-8dc18ebd-da60-45b7-9c3b-20b890190228 2/28/2019, 3:34 PM
I then updated FF to the latest version (65.0.2), and it crashed on close again: bp-50be2de4-859f-4e55-86d7-472d50190228 2/28/2019, 3:56 PM
Once again, clearing the offline website data prevents crashing on close (see previous posts in this topic).
Thanks, John B.

Hi philipp,
Thank you for the suggestions. I'm content to live with the problem as it only happens when closing FF. I only posted today it to let you know that your previous solution didn't completely work around the problem. I'm sure the devs will find a fix in time.
Thank you again, John B.
Since this is about using clearing history when Firefox closes, you can consider to disable this feature or at least exclude offline data.
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history":
[X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" -> Settings - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/delete-browsing-search-download-history-firefox
