I've been told that upgrading from an older FF would discard all bookmarks and passwords, due to a change in how FF saves this information? And that the only way to retain this information is to sign up for Sync?

hi, this is not the case - if you are using multiple different firefox installations (nightly, devedition, beta, release) next to each other at the same time, those will keep distinct profiles with separate settings etc from now on by default though. firefox sync would be a way to keep your data the same across multiple installations

Dedicated profiles per Firefox installation
