I have a new pc and I am trying to restore my bookmarks
I have made a backup (which is saved as a firefox document) but how do I get the new version to recognise it? I have already copied the file over to the new profile in program files, but it cant seem to see it (not sure what version of firefox I had before (think it was an earlier version) but now using 3.6.12

What did you backup?
Firefox stores user data such as bookmarks in the profile folder rather than in program files. For details of the location of the profile folder see the profiles article. You can copy the data manually by copying the contents of the profile folder, for details see Profile backup - MozillaZine Knowledge Base or Recovering important data from an old profile.
I take it you still have access to the old computer, if so there are some add-ons and utilities that can make this process easier. The first one is the FEBE add-on which can be used to copy a profile. Another option is the free MozBackup utility.

If it is an HTML backup with a .html file extension then you can import that file in the Firefox bookmarks Manager.
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML : "From File"

Thanks! I'd copied the wrong file across (had saved down both the profie and the prog files bookmarks) so this is now fixed.
Thanks again!
