Why does my Most Visited folder always show Empty

I have tried to create new Most Visited bookmarks several times. They appear in the toolbar, but they always show "empty" as does the pre-installed Most Visited bookmark.

Does the normal browsing history work (e.g. via View > Sidebar > History) ?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
