Firefox will not open pdf files & changes the options/applications settings?

more options

Whenever I opt to view a pdf file, all I can get is a blank "about:blank" & nothing further happens. I have tried changing options/applications settings to both "Acrobat Reader" and to "Save". But every time Firefox changes the settings back to "Adobe Acrobat (default)" and again nothing happens.

Chrome will let me view the pdf files but Firefox will not allow me to view or to save.
