how do I show bookmarks on desk top in a column

I the past, I was able to show my bookmarks in a column on the left hand side of my home page.. And there was an icon to collapse or show the column. How do I get this function back?

{ Ctrl + B } toggles the Bookmarks Sidebar on / off.
