I went from 3.6 to 7 then 7 to 8 but 8 messed things up royally for me and disabled most of my addons so I went back to 7 but now you say that 7 is not secure and I should go to 8 or back to 3.6 but 3.6 will be for a short time. So I ask. How short a time? and If I go to 8, have you fixed the problems with it yet? Because I tell you this as a long time firefox customer. If I go to 3.6 and then you take that away and you haven't fixed 8 so that I can use my addons, then note: YOU WILL NO LONGER HAVE ME AS A CUSTOMER. I have put up with all the nonsense for a very long time and I have had enough. Fix it or I am gone.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Do check for updates to your Extensions as they may have been older versions that only supported 7.* at most when you updated to 8.0

Firefox 3.6.* (3.6.24 is current) is still barely getting security updates and may likely until around April when a new version is made as the extended support release, mainly for Enterprise users though.
