I have just installed Mageia Linux 4. I have decided to use Thunderbird instead of KMail, which I used to use.

Before I installed Mageia, I copied all my emails to a portable hard drive.

How do I copy those emails to Thundebird?

Did you export the KMail mail to mbox files? If so, you should be able to import it to TB with ImportExportTools:
