Cannot erase marked messages

After downloading messages, it is no longer possible to erase them, move them to trash folder, yet possible to open.

Is the 'Deleted' / 'Trash' folder full ?

  • Right click on 'Deleted' folder and select 'Empty Folder'
  • Right click on 'Deleted Folder and select 'Compact'

Then retry to delete an email.

What I mean is that already in the "inbox" it is impossible to mark and delete, or mark and move to trash folder. Am not able yet to move it to 'deleted' folder!

When you want to delete an email, what method are you using?

Does it work if you:

  • right click on the email in the list
  • select 'move to' > 'mail account' > 'Deleted/ trash' folder

Does it sound like this bug:

If yes, please vote for it. You would need to logon to add a comment, Such as the OS you use, What version of Thunderbird, what language.


I would try to get a fresh download.

Uninstall the current version via control Panel > Programs and Features then download fresh version from here:

Make hidden folders visible.

The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folder.

access Profile folder located here:

Windows:

    C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Profile name\ Mail\ mail account name\Trash

Quick method:

  • in thunderbird
  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • click on 'Show Folder' button
  • a new window open showing profile folders.
  • Close Thunderbird now
  • click on Mail folder
  • click on mail account name
  • look for 'Trash' and 'Trash.msf' files - delete these files.
  • close window - top right X
  • restart Thunderbird. New delete/trash folder will be created.
