I imported over 6000 emails from Yahoo, they have disappeared from my Inbox.

When I insert a word in the filter or search boxes I can see the old e-mails related to that word, but I cannot open them. The old emails seem to be there but not in my Inbox anymore, and not able to be opened?

Are you talking about a Pop mail account?

try this: right click on Inbox and select 'Properties' click on 'Repair folder' button and click on OK

Then refresh the Folder Pane by collapsing and reopening folders. Use the small arrow to the left of folders and mail account name.

Thanks, I tried this earlier, but no change.

1. Are you talking about a Pop mail account?

If yes: Check the emails are actually in the Inbox.

Make hidden files and folders visiable. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

then in Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'show folder' button

A new window opens showing Profie folder You should see a folder called 'Mail' click on 'Mail' click on pop mail account look for 'Inbox' file (not Inbox.msf) you can right click on Inbox file and open using 'Notepad' Can you see loads of emails?

Update:

Close Thunderbird now.

Whilst looking in the Appdata\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profile \Profile name\Mail\mail account name\ Inbox file:

When an email is deleted, it is 'marked as deleted' but not fully removed until compacted.

Emails that have been 'marked for deletion' will have the following line:

  • X-Mozilla-Status: 0008

Use 'Edit' and 'Find' to locate any emails which you can remember who they were from or date to locate the emails that were deleted or use '0008'.

if there are none marked as 0008, just report back on what you do see.

If there are loads of emails with the 0008, it is possible to save them. Change all the 0008 to 0001 as below to unmark them.

  • X-Mozilla-Status: 0001

then File > Save then close the file. Top right X.

Open thunderbird.

Thanks for the advice. There is a "inbox.msf" and a "inbox" file, but the "inbox" file has no association, so I cannot open it. You mentioned Notepad but I can't see any connection? The "inbox" file is over 1.8GB, so I guess the missing e-mails are there. but I can't open the file. Can you please help?

Regards from David

Use File|Open inside notepad. You don't need an association to open a file.

Your file is rather large. Notepad may struggle. I recommend Notepad++.

Thanks. But, where is Notepad? I have never used this program and I can't locate it. My ultrabook does not seem to have Notepad on it.

Windows OS usuaslly comes with some basic but useful programs.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad

If you do not have Notepad, you could download and install Notepad++ from here: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.6.9.html

To open a file: right click on file and choose Open a window opens asking what to Open With. Notepad should be in the list to select and then click on OK

Sorry for the delay , been away. Still a problem.

When I open T/bird help I can access the popmail folder and then the inbox that you referred to. The inbox is over 1.8GB so my e-mails must be there.

But , when I open Notepad, and then go to file open, I cannot see the inbox file, I can only see the popmail folder, I cannot get any further.

Any ideas welcomed.

re: When I open T/bird help I can access the popmail folder and then the inbox that you referred to. The inbox is over 1.8GB so my e-mails must be there. Well that is good news.

There are two methods of opening a file, but remember Thunderbird must be closed.

1. Locate the Inbox file in Profile folders, right click on that file and choose 'Open'. It will then open a new small window asking 'Open With' and you choose 'Notepad' from the selection offered and click on 'Open'.

3. The second method is to open Notepad and then 'File' > 'Open' A window opens so that you can choose the file. at the bottom it will say 'File name' and to the right of that make sure that 'All files(*.*) is selected from the drop down. This option is required in order to show all the files, otherwise you will only see the folders and not the files. - this sounds like the problem you mentioned.

Then you need to locate the Profile folder, click on 'Mail', click on the 'mail account name' to open the folder select the Inbox file click on 'Open'

Still problems:

1. When I right click on the inbox file there is no "open with" option, only open or opendlg or open with free file viewer.

2. When I open notepad i get a blank scree except for the menu bar, then when i choose "file" then "open" then I get the explorer directory, can't see any ref to "file name" at the bottom?

I am using windows 7.

Sorry, an update on the above.

Item 2: I was able to find the ALL FILES option sorry for not being able to see that before. However, NOTEPAD cannot open as the file 1.8GB is too large. It says to FIND ANOTHER EDITOR?

Can you help again please? Thanks for the help so far, i feel I am getting somewhere!

install Notepad++ from here:

Actually you may still have issues with very large file size using Notepad++.

So you could try WordPad which should be auto available as as option when you right click on file and choose Open, the open with options should display it.

or download this: http://www.editpadlite.com/download.html

Thanks, I loaded notepad++.

But, it cannot open my inbox file, the message being that the file size (1.8GB) is too big for notepad++.

Is there another program that can open such a 1.8GB file?

Maybe Far manager?

I have loaded far manager but can't work out what to do next. There are about 15 files on a blue background. I can't see a reference to OPEN anywhere?
