I have trouble on multiple websites some buttons or links that have an image file such as .ico will not load. All the appears is a square w/ 4 letters/numbers. I've looked at several questions here & have not been able to fix this issue.

Hi km9v, The file that stores the ico files might be corrupted.

This question has the file path where the temporary files are located on a Windows 8.1 machine and the ico file should be close by: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../1034613

If you also clear the temporary files you may be able to load them into the cache again. However, deleting temporary files does also clear out othe stored files.

Missing icons are usually supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you might see by little boxes that show the hex code of the characters instead.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).

gfx.downloadable_fonts is enabled. "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" is also checked. This issue is also occurring in chrome & IE. I believe it has something to do w/ segoe UI font not displaying properly. I've tried using different versions of the font w/ no change. For example: at msn (dot) com the "MSN" , "Outlook", "Office"..... items show up as a square with 2x2 letters/numbers instead of the some sort of icon. Under inspect element, they all use segoe UI font.

Has anything been changed in the Windows Control Panel under colors for fonts?

No, other than the segoe UI font I updated it to a later version then revert back to the original version.
