Hi

The trouble I am having is that whenever is start Firefox I am asked to input my master password. To clarify a few things:

  • I want a master password and do have one set.
  • I don't want to get rid of my master password.

The issue I have with the password request on start up is that once I put the password in the one time from then on in that browsing session it will not request the password when a sites requires a password. It will simply input all of my saved passwords in the moment the site loads. This defeats the purpose of having a master password set.

If I click "cancel" on the master password request button when Firefox loads it will ask me for a password every time there is a password to be imputed. It will not automatically put the password in until I enter my master password. This is what I want. I just don't want it asking me for a password every time it opens.

Thanks Niels

Are you using Sync in Firefox?

The Sync version used in Firefox 34 and later uses the password manager to store the name (e-mail) and password to be used to connect to the Sync server. The chrome://FirefoxAccounts entry in the password manager stores the authentication data (kA and kB) in JSON format. Previous Firefox versions stored this data in the signedInUser.json file in the profile folder, but the current version only stores the sessionToken in this file and needs the password manager for the Sync credentials.

This can also happen if you open a page that has a log in form when you start Firefox, so maybe check the home page setting.

I figured I should have mentioned that I read the thread from which you copied your previous post.

Yes I am using sync. No I am not loading any page on start up

Even if sync needs my password that should not unlock all my other passwords so that they are immediately imputed to pages that require login. I should be asked for a password every time I attempt to log into a page. That is what happens (as I stated above) when I click cancel.

That is what I want to happen. I just don't want it asking for my password when it first loads. I want it asking at each login point.

Sync needs to access the Password Manager to get the authentication details and the MP is used to decrypt all the passwords, so this is all or nothing.

You can log out from the software security device once Sync has asked for the MP. Easiest to do this is to cancel the MP prompt that you get if you click Show Passwords in the Password Manager.

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Saved Passwords" > "Show Passwords"
