New bookmarks not saved, all history lost

This morning I created some new bookmarks, then quit Firefox. No apparent problems during that session or when quitting. But when relaunching, the new bookmarks are gone and all my history is gone. There is a places.sqlite.corrupt file in the profile folder, which I deleted. All seems to be working fine but I can't restore the lost history. Suggestions?

Firefox 58.0.2. on macOS 10.12.6

Bookmarks are automatically backed up into a folder. Unfortunately, there are no other backups unless you create them.

I use an add-on that makes backups of my user profile, Just In Case. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: In case you need to restore from these backups, you may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.

It might have been better if you hadn't deleted places.sqlite.corrupt because that file had your history. If a new places.sqlite file is created then you always lose the history. Bookmarks are rebuild from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder, but a new backup is only created on the next start.
