FireFox 16.0.2 Non Responsive when clicking links or loading pages

more options

FireFox 16.0.2 has been very sluggish and majority of websites you visit with FF just hangs and freezes, it may become back responsive after a few minutes, but this happens very frequently and I don't think it is specific to Flash as it does this with sites that do not use Flash

When you click on a link FireFox freezes completely then returns to normal after a 30 seconds to a minute. 4 of my coworkers experience the same problem and they use different machines.

I have to force stop the application.

Hi,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Also, If you have security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) installed, you can try deleting all existing instances of Firefox and its related processes/files in all the different configuration modules/areas of the security software like process monitoring, sub/spawned process control, virtualization, HIPS etc., in addition to the security software's main configuration panel. Instead create new fully allowed/trusted rules for Firefox + its related processes in all the different modules/panels - a genuine/original Firefox installer as well as all the installed EXEs (Application) and DLLs (Application extension) are digitally signed by Mozilla Corporation (right-click > Properties > Digital Signatures). Even otherwise, some security software may also ask again when Firefox and/or its sub processes are started, and you may be able to allow/trust at that time. Please see this.

Hi

Thanks for the solution. It fixed majority of the issues every now and again it will act up but not like it was before, I re installed Firebug and it seems to be performing much better.

It is starting again but the biggest culprit is Gmail. Not sure what causes these issues I only have Firebug installed. Never had these issues with FF before just that it has become real heavy.

If Firebug is active in the background there could be a slight sluggishness depending on the content. If it is only happening in Gmail you can also try to temporarily log in minus the Gmail labs and check: https://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0

For checking the plain HTML GMail version, please try this: https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=e

Thanks for responding so quickly. Actually it does it on websites that have a lot of scripting in the background. Gmail was one of them. But if you go to some of the news sites like CNN, etc. it happens as well.

I think it is a more wide spread problem, a lot of my co workers experience the same issues with the new updates. Not sure if this is a bug or defect that Mozilla is aware of but we have about 50 web developers in my dept. and most stated same issues. Previous versions were fine unless the plug ins are need to be updated. I will try that as well.

If you are able to reproduce it consistently and across the board, you could consider filing a bug report.

Also, the MozillaZine forum would be helpful. You would be able to get valuable feedback from web developers and add-on developers.
