... and after I "force quit" the program my local folders are filled with emails that already have been downloaded, so plenty of duplicates!!

How can I prevent crashes; prevent emails being downloaded again and how can I get rid of duplicate emails?

I use an 27" iMac with OSX 10.11.2 and Thunderbird 38.5.1.

It wasn't a crash as such. Thunderbird generated a message saying it couldn't login to my mail account although I received and replied messages all the time shortly before. Then came this blue spinning wheel for some minutes. Thunderbird became unresponsive and when I force quitted the program I saw lots of duplicates in the in boxes.
