I am connected to the internet via Optus/NBN but I can't get emails - the message is Thunderbird is not responding.

Thunderbird won't download emails and the message is that it is not responding. I tried sending an email yesterday and it went through okay but the reply only shows up on my phone not via Thunderbird.
