started Tbird today and all my existing accts and collected e-mail were gone - how can I retrieve it all?

I have been using Tbird for years. Today when I started my Windows (up to date) laptop, instead of Tbird starting normally, it came up with no e-mails, did not get messages and asked me to set up an account. I apparently had lost all five e-mail accounts, all unerased read or unread e-mail for all accounts and all settings. Is there any known reason for this, and any known remedy to get all this back. It's a disaster for me, for sure.
