Thunderbird 78.4.0 crashes upon launch
Thunderbird 78.4.0 has been crashing frequently for weeks, and today it won't run at all, even in safe mode. I am on a Macbook Pro, a few months old, OS 10.15.7. I tried re-installing it, no change. I always send problem reports! You must have a thousand of them now. Feeling desperate!

Sorry for the confusion, TB has been doing this for weeks. I just thought you'd want to know the current version. I have sent many crash reports to Thunderbird, but now when I Force Quit it no longer generates one, it just goes away.
Please help!
Here's the real mystery: I have two logins on my Mac. The other one, which I use for work, also uses Thunderbird. I has had some of the crashes, but not nearly as many. But it is still working! I set up my personal mail account on it just now, and it works fine. Is this a clue?

I don't know why there is only this one, because there have been multiple, daily, for ages. Virtually all sent to Mozilla. Should be hundreds.

This is not working. The first 3 sections of this complete report went astray. I have saved it in a text file, but your "Browse" button wants images. If you can advise me how to get this to you, or persuade Thunderbird to send it like it should, I'm happy to comply.
I think when I re-installed Thunderbird this afternoon it 'forgot' all the past reports. So the one I sent you a while ago may be all there is for now. It currently is not sending them when it crashes.

That one is dated 2020-06-01 - so not recent. Help > troubleshooting will list your crash IDs There is a "submitted" column
I am telling you that things have now reached such a state that when I launch TB, and it's immediately spinning, and then I Force Quit it, it is not generating a report. It isn't doing anything. It just goes away. I went through your procedure, and that old report from June was all that was there. No others. This reminds me that this has been happening for months, not weeks, and I've just been putting up with it!
I do have the full text of one report from last night which I got by clicking the "details" button on the crash reporter. It didn't send this report to Mozilla. That was a failure mode for a while last night before it stopped doing even that much. I tried to send some of the report, but it is very long. I have it as a text message if there is some way I can send it to you. The "add images" option here doesn't want a text message, and the whole thing is too big to put in one of these messages.
I did try uninstalling and re-installing TB yesterday, and that doesn't appear to have helped (and may have made things worse). I have re-booted repeatedly. I really don't know what to do now.
This is what I found when having trouble with Thunderbird on a Mac after getting a new computer a year ago.

When upgrading to a new Mac, the technicians transferred an impression of our old operating system into the new Mac. The problems we had with Thunderbird on the old computer where inherited by the new computer. Uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird did not help. Trouble persisted until we installed Thunderbird version 45 to resolve issues.
Thank you, crackers1929. In fact, this was a new MacBook Pro, bought in May. I've had nothing but trouble with it. I transferred everything from my old Mac (which I still have: its disk was full & it had too little memory, but otherwise works fine), and have had trouble with Messages and Thunderbird almost from the get-go. But it does mean I have the latest, hottest version of Catalina OS.
Ok, here's what I think should be a major clue: I have a second log-in on this computer that I use strictly for business purposes. It also uses Thunderbird, but with my business email account. So, under that log-in I added my personal email account to Thunderbird, and it's working fine, although it has occasionally exhibited this same crash. This is the same program, right? So what could be so drastically wrong in my personal account that TB won't work at all, while it works in the other login? And how can I fix it?
Lets get the terminology correct. Then perhaps those you are talking to will comprehend what you are talking about.
1. When Thunderbird crashes is produces a crash report that is submitted to a mozilla server. You offered one of those from June. Therefore I guess you are not crashing. Despite your assertions to the contrary. 2. When Thunderbird freezes nothing happens at all. And I do mean nothing 3. When you "Force Quit" in apple terminology any report is sent to apple. But that is not a crash, or a crash report as far as Thunderbird is concerned. That is some sort of diagnostic information used by apple for a purpose I simply do not understand at all. A bit like Windows crash reports. I do not understand them either.
If Thunderbird is freezing, have you left it for an extended time to actually complete what it is doing and get back to you? I had to wait 4 hours for an upgrade to complete to work out is was a failure. I also had to repeatedly continue times out scripts to keep the process ticking over.
That the user interface is not responding does not mean the program has stopped, only that the graphical parts are not responding to user input. Two completely different things in reality. Especially when the program in question has extensive database functions running under the hood as well as often gigabytes of data to manage and house keep. I am not excusing the fact the user interface stops responding, it should always loop our of processor intensive tasks to update the UI, but that is does not is as time inconvenient or a poor choice. Not a true freeze.
Some things that are know to cause issues are 1. Streaming backups to either a local device or the internet. 2. Synchronised storage locations used for the profile folder. 3. Anti virus products locking the relevant files for scanning just when Thunderbird wants to use them. The appearance of files with names including -1 -2 -3 in them is often associated. 4. Slow disk access, or a full disk meaning re allocations have t5o occur for each major write. 5. Failure to compact. Thunderbird asks to purge old data so it can manage it's files correctly. Many folks refuse these requests until the system is just "junked up" with previously deleted junk. It also significantly increases loss of data through virus detection as nothing, even deleted spam, is ever actually purged. There is often years of old spammy and malware type mails left hidden on the system for the anti virus to play with.
I do not offer any guarantees that the above will help, only that they are common issues and causes. The fact a "New" profile works leaves me thinking you perhaps should start with a full compact from the file menu.

Specifically what happens is the spinning "beach ball" begins immediately when the program is launched and continues indefinitely, although I confess I haven't waited more than an hour. Since June this has been happening occasionally, first fairly rarely, then with increasing frequency to several times/day. Until yesterday morning it was sending reports, then it stopped doing anything at all. There must have been hundreds of reports.
In desperation yesterday I uninstalled Thunderbird and re-installed it, a new download, which may be why there are no stored reports except the one from June. The new version behaves no better than the old one (hangs w/ beach ball immediately after launch) and does not make a report. It has never asked about purging or compacting anything. I do have Malwarebytes installed.
As I said above, a significant factor appears to be that Thunderbird works fine with the same email accounts on my other log-in on the Mac. The computer is pretty new, has a huge disk which is practically empty.

I would suggest you disable as much of malware bytes as you can and see if that improves things. Things like "scan encrypted connections" and "scan email" can be particularly problematical.
