Can't open jpeg attachments

Since moving to windows 10 i am not able to just click on a received attachment in the message pane and see the attachment. When i click nothing happens. This problem is with all jpeg and docx attachments. ( strangely, pdfs do open fine in acrobat reader). If i right click and click on" Open" nothing happens. The only way i can see it is by right clicking and using the Save as ( or detach, or delete) option, and themn open it in another program. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

in case i wasn't clear the problem is in Thunderbird, version 91.4.1 64 bit
